“I really enjoy forgetting. When I first come to a place, I notice all the little details. I notice the way the sky looks. The color of white paper. The way people walk. Doorknobs. Everything. Then I get used to the place and I don’t notice those things anymore. So only by forgetting can I see the place again as it really is.” -David Byrne, True Stories

I accidentally let my first “y’all” slip the other day. It was pretty traumatic.

“How was college in Canada? Your pictures on Facebook looked like you had a lot of fun.”
Well, there you go. You now know about how many friends I have, what they look like, what sort of people they appear to be, how often we’re together, the sorts of things we do, where we’ve been, how we decorate, how we relate and what we think is funny. You know all of my inside jokes. You saw me look great and you saw me look ridiculous and you’ve been six hundred miles away all along and I didn’t even know you were watching. You’ve had an intimate glimpse into a social circle you will likely never encounter. My life is and has been an open book.
Somehow, this isn’t creepy at all. It’s commonplace. I’ve seen your pictures too.
We all live vicariously through one another more often than ever before. Do we, then, know one another on a deeper level or a more shallow one because of this? Reviewing someone else’s year in pictures is very personal, but the fact that they are not there showing them to you and commenting them makes it rather impersonal. What effect does this have on the dynamics of current relationships?

Not being at college anymore is stupid because I have nobody to straighten my hair.
